What is a gusset

What is a gusset?

A gusset is a piece of fabric that is inserted into a seam to add width to a garment.

The most common shape is triangular, however it can be any shape.   Clothes that are too tight can have a gusset inserted to give room.  The most common insertion would be in the underarm - side seam of a garment.  This would give more room across the bust/chest.

Another area it could be inserted would be in the top section of a suit jacket sleeve.  My son works out with weight training so he usually needs a gusset added to the top of his jacket sleeves.  If it is a suit, using the cut off from the hem allows the gusset to not be so noticeable.

If you do not have the same fabric, try for a color match rather than a fabric type match.  Both would be great but is generally not possible.

Another area for a gusset would be the inside leg in the crotch area.  Some tailors will have an insert at the inside leg that is not quite triangular, but has been added because the person has a large thigh.

Happy altering
