Jacket sleeve tight upper arm, is usually a problem for people who work out using weights.  Their upper body is bulked, which means the shoulders and upper arms are bulked.

For all those people with arms that are a little bigger above the elbow, purchasing a jacket can be a nightmare.  My son had to buy a suit for a ball, and because he works out with weights, he has very broad shoulders and large muscular upper arms.  Thankfully the suit trousers needed shortening, so I had fabric to create a gusset in the outside arm giving width across the bicep.

The outside arm is unpicked and in this instance I went all the way around to the inside arm so that I could EASE the excess back into the sleeve, because the back panel did not require any extra fabric.  In fact I took the back side seam IN because my son wanted it fitted at the waist.

Notice that the grain of the gusset is in the same direction as the upper panel, so as to try and alleviate drawing the eye to the gusset.

Attach the gusset, sewing one side from the outside arm up to the armhole, and press the seams flat.  Next start to stitch below the gusset on the outside arm and sew up to the armhole. Press.

Sew two rows of stitching from the outside arm seam to the inside arm seam and EASE the sleeve back onto the armhole.

Happy altering
