Overlocker or serger

Overlocker for clothing alterations is a must in my opinion.  A garment that has been zig zagged on the edges is not professional (in my opinion).  Doing alterations for family is fine.  Doing clothing alterations as a profession and being paid is another story.   I have a 13 page Price Guide in my Clothing Alteration Business Package.  I explain how to charge out at around $40 per hour.  To charge that rate and zig zag the seams is not right in my book.

I have put together a video on some of the methods I use with my over locker.  Clothing alterations should have a professional finish.

There is also a section on how to understand your overlocker (serger) a little better by attaching four different colors.  When overlocked onto white fabric the variety of thread colors helps to understand which thread goes through which section to create the final over lock.

Anyone who is considering doing clothing alterations for a living, should consider using an overlocker (serger).  It creates a professional finish, which cannot be achieved with a zig zag stitch.

This video explains how I use my overlocker and how I create a nice wide finish.

It is not necessary to buy new.  I started my first shop with a 20 year old overlocker.  But it sewed beautifully.  They can be found at garage sales or on computer selling websites.  In Australia we have Gum Tree which is a great place to purchase from.

I also have a gathering foot and an elastic gathering foot, so I will do some videos on those as well.  They save a lot of time and are great for your own personal use when making for family and friends.

Happy altering
