How to unpick imitation buttonholes which are a common feature on men's suit jackets.

Some designers are using manufacturers who do not have an industrial imitation buttonhole machine.  Standard buttonholes are sewn (like on a domestic machine) and the buttonhole has been cut!  This creates a major problem for the customer and the person shortening the jacket sleeve.  How can a sleeve be shortened if the FABRIC IS CUT?

When imitation buttonholes are used, it is simple to unpick them and the fabric is not damaged.  But when buttonholes are cut it is difficult to alter.

I have created two videos in Magic Circle which provide two options to get around the problem of cut buttonholes.  The first is how to shorten from the sleeve cap. This option can only be used if the upper arm on the sleeve does not become too tight.  Men who work out with weights may not be able to use this option.  The second option is to unpick the buttonholes and sew some type of fabric/ribbon over the tear in the fabric.

Imitation buttonholes may need to be unpicked because -

  1. how to unpick imitation buttonholes on mens jacket

Sleeve is being shortened half way through the buttonholes or just above leaving only one or two buttonholes

  2. Buttonholes too close to the end of the sleeve
  3. Buttonholes will end up on the hem allowance

Happy altering
