We usually use chalk to mark up hems when shortening trousers, but did you know you can try marking clothes with soap to get the new length.

Please never use pens or pencils to mark a garment.  Some pens are impossible to get out.  Would you believe I have people bring in pants that has a line from one side of the side seam to another using pen or permanent marker.  AND the line is not even straight.....  I am so passionate about what I do, that I really get upset about doing this kind of thing.  So if you don't have any chalk to mark with, try using a piece of soap.  Mark the new hem length, then come down for the new hem allowance.  The soap will either rub off after use, or you can dampen the garment and the soap will come off.

Happy sewing
