Trousers seam edge taped

/, Trousers/Trousers seam edge taped

Trousers seam edge taped can create more work if the trousers are being taken in.  Suit trousers are normally taken in from the center back.  There are two options when taking in.  The first is to unpick the tape and after the excess fabric has been cut away, reattach the tape. This does take more time, but can also have a problem.  The problem is that there may not be enough tape.  When taking a garment in there will be more fabric, which means if there is not enough at the top (folded into band) then the tape will be short.

The second option is to unpick the tape at the bottom where the seam has stopped being taken in.

Back pinned on trousers

Center back seam taped

When pinning the back, if the band is very thick use hat pins.  This is an alteration I did for a customer who had pinned the trousers herself.
Occasionally the center back seam will be bound by tape on either side of the seam.

Excess overlocked (serged) off

Tape attached over edge of overlocking

Cut away the excess seam allowance and over lock the edge. Notice that I have over locked past the cut section on the tape.  This is because I will fold the end of the tape over and stitch flat.

And this is what it looks like finished. It saves a lot of time, and most clients are quite happy for the revised finish.  Always ask first though.
