Bodkin is a must for every sewing room. One of the uses is when threading elastic. Even if the elastic is wide, it will grip the elastic and slide through the encased fabric easily. I have used it on a 2.5 cm (1 in) wide elastic and it works fine. It is better than a safety pin, because the safety pin can open whilst still encased which can cause problems.
It will also thread ribbon or any other type of encased notion. It has small claws at the end to grip the item. It also has a circle which can be pushed up the length of the bodkin which will force the claws tighter holding it in place.
