Replace jacket zippers can take a bit of time because most jackets are lined.  If you are charging for your time, the customer may find it cheaper to go buy another jacket.  But if the jacket is a favorite, then they will have to suffer the cost.  It takes me from one hour and up to two hours to replace a jacket zip.  I am again assuming that the jacket is lined.

Unpicking the original will take up between half an hour and three quarters of an hour.

  • When you sew the new one back in, complete one side first.
  • Attach the lining to the back of the zip first, then attach the front.
  • Once you have the lining attached, you will have to pop this side through to the opposite side which will be open.
  • Bag the top and bottom
  • Then push it back through.
  • Sew the back of the zipper to the last side, and check to see that when the zip is done it that it is even both sides.
  • Now you have to make an opening in the jacket lining probably in the inside arm seam.
  • Pull the zip section through and attach the zip to the front layer.
  • Bag top and bottom.
  • Top stitch both sides.
  • Close the opening under the inside arm.
