This is how I repair stud torn from jeans.  First of all there will be a hole from where the stud was torn from the denim fabric.  I have seen some repairs, where a needle and thread are used to pull the fabric together, but the problem with this is that the replacement stud or button will pull away on the first use. The jeans I repaired had lost two studs. There is a hole where the stud was.  Not a big one, but if not repaired, any new button or stud will not stay attached.

The first hole has had a piece of denim fabric inserted.  Use serrated scissors to stop an outline of the insert showing.  The top most hole has had the denim inserted and a pin is holding it in place.

Use tweezers to poke the fabric into the hole.  Maneuver to center it over the hole in-between the layers.

Darn the hole, but make sure to darn at least a 1 cm (3/8 in) either side of the hole, so that the piece of fabric underneath is caught.

Attach the button using a strong needle to get through the darning. The finished darn should look like the photo on the right.  I used buttons instead of putting in more studs.  I purchase buttons that are similar to jean buttons, for this exact reason

.
When attaching buttons in any fabric and in particular heavy fabric, have the thread doubled BEFORE you thread into the needle.  This means the thread has four strands.  Use a good quality thread

Happy altering,
