How to stop threads from getting tangled

Check out my container on the right.  I have three such containers.  One for white, cream through to green.  Another for grey, blue through to black and one for orange through to red.  Naturally the threads are all different types, and whilst a company like Gutterman's spools allow the thread to be inserted into a section at the top of the spool, most companies do not bother.

A friend of mine Martyn Smith showed me how he protected his threads by wrapping it in plastic.  The type you use for craft.  It is not too thin nor too thick, and when rolled onto itself it sticks.

Cut strip of plastic to cover thread with a little extra for overlap

Wrap around spool.  I have used an overlap of around 2 cm

Thread with plastic wrapped around spool and self sticks to itself

This is one of my shop workbenches with steel rods for threads which were color coordinated.
Happy altering
